Why You Should Not Choose Alliance Broadband

Alliance Broadband is no doubt one of the leading providers in Kolkata. When 3G is a great failure and broadband connections are too expensive Alliance comes into picture just like an oasis. I mean, you can’t really believe how they could manage to maintain such attractive price list. Still I would say avoid Alliance if possible. And I will give you handful of reasons in this Alliance Broadband Review.

It’s monsoon in Kolkata. Roads are flooded with rain water. Alliance broadband connection reaches your nearest cable operator through underground connection. And there’s the main problem. During monsoon water reaches the cables and damages them. As a result you start facing annoying connectivity issues, slow connection speed and frequent loss of connection.

Worried, you go to your cable operator. He clearly refuses to log a complain and without hesitation concludes, “It’s because of the rainy reason. We can’t fix it. It is supposed to happen.”

Yes this is another major problem. You consume the service of Alliance, but never get an option to get their help directly. You have to contact your cable operator, the mediator who will fix your problems. But often, because of their lack of expertise, you won’t get a solution.

Paying bills is again a pain. On date, you would highly expect that an ISP would accept online payments. But no, Alliance won’t do that. You have to reach your cable operator’s office to pay the bill offline. This is really hectic.

If you are a night-unlimited customer, then you might face one more issue. Often your scheduled happy-time starts irregularly. Instead of 1 am you would get the speed boost an hour later or two.

These are the reasons why I often regret my decision of choosing Alliance broadband. Many a times, only cheap price doesn’t matter. If you want to use intrnet for serious reasons like work from home, freelancing, money transferring, or online shopping, Alliance is not really a got option.

Sorry to hear that. But I don’t have a better alternative. Do they cover Cosba area? And what are the plans available with alliance?

Sorry, I don’t have that information. Get in touch with your local cable operator. They might give you some info.
Go to Alliance Broadband’s website and you’ll get the current plans’ details.

      Samrat,
Thanks for reading the review. I think, you should. But few points to remember are:

      1. Check whether your local cable operator can provide Alliance connection or not.
      2. Whether they will provide support on-demand or not
      3. Rs 1050 is excluding service tax (12.5%)!. So it becomes around Rs 1181.

But finally I must say, when the cable-link is good (less consumers sharing same cable), Alliance is the best in Kolkata. I use PREFERRED UNLIMITED RELOADED plan, and I used to download at 500 KBps (download speed) from regular links and upto 2MBps (download speed) from torrent during Happy Hours. And now they have assigned a 24×7 Help Desk number too! It’s 18001200300

My first question is that whether is there any isp better than alliance which provide extreme peering?
My second question is that, in their 750 unlimited plan they say the peering bandwidth is 25 mbps,so whats my max download speed then?
my third question is that what are the torrent sites supported by alliance?

Yes they do. I use Preferred plan of Rs 750/-
I used to download at 90KBps during regular time and at 450+KBps during night from http links.
Torrent speed rises upto 2MBps where seeders are adequate.

Hi bro , im using Alliance Broadband since 2008 . I live near tollygunge area . From 2008 to 2013 it went well . i was quite satisfied with their service and that too at a reasonable price . I mean there were temporary problems like slow speed issues etc. but they were eventually solved after complaining.

I too used the Preferred Plan like you did at Rs.840 or 860 … can’t remember exactly the price , since it was last year . So i used the Preferred Plan for 5 to 6 months . At first it was really good .
From 1 am i used to get max 355kbps download speed ( which is normal direct download from filehosts like rapidgator , depositfiles etc.) But after a few months they stopped providing the 355kbps download speed , and upon complaining to the customer care , they said that in their package its written that we can get UPTO 355kbps , and they didn’t promise anything that we will get that speed.
So it was useless arguing with them .
… And like you said in your post , as time went by , i noticed they delayed the speed boost by an hour or two .
On some nights i got the max speed of 355kbps on 2AM to 3AM which was really pathetic. I mean i had to stay awake till the middle of the night to start the Big downloads .

Therefore i switched back to the Zoom Plus package , but this year , since Feb 2014 , things have become worse . The speed is so damn slow that even sites like youtube gmail yahoo or any educational or news site takes almost 10 seconds to load properly . At first i thought it could be bcoz of some virus that have crept into my system bypassing the anti-virus protection . So i formatted all drives and re-installed my OS , and yet the same slow speed issue .
Even after complaining them a dozen times , they did nothing . Just for the sake of it , the local cable operator sent one of his wire men to my home with his laptop , and he saw the situation , yet he didn’t show up anymore after that day , neither did they care to Call me up to enquire the situation . So i decided that at the end of this month i would switch to photon .
Any other 3g data card services that you can recommend ?

I mean , i heard a lot of good things about MTS . My family members are also using MTS (cheap plan) , but upon downloading a file via MTS and saving that file on desktop location , i often noticed they aren’t visible , yet the file exists in desktop location . Upon complaining to the MTS department , they said it could be my browser’s fault . I told them i use Firefox which is the best browser . I even told them i experienced this problem on two different laptops , but ultimately they couldn’t figure out the source of this problem .
Any of you guys experienced this problem with MTS??
I hope while using Photon i wouldn’t have such issues .

Hi, I am using Alliance Broadband connection. The cable operator already set up my connection. Its working fine on my laptop. But when I am trying to use it on my friend’s laptop by inserting the RJ45 port directly its not responding. Can anybody help me how to set it up on another laptop???

Well you see when Alliance Broadband provides you with your unique IP address they link that IP address to your Laptop/PC’s MAC address. So whenever you try to plug it into another device the MAC address mismatch error shows up on the login screen.

One way to solve your problem is to connect it to your laptop and use Connectify Hotspot (a software to create wifi hotspots on wifi enabled devices) and then let your friend use that wifi to access the internet.

The other way is to download some software that could change the MAC address of your friend’s Laptop to match that of yours and then connect the RJ45 cable to log into your account. 🙂

Alliance binds you profile with the MAC address of the system from which you connected internet for the first time. As a result, it disallows to connect using your username/password from any other system/router. Call Alliance 24×7 Technical support on 18001200300 and request them to disable MAC binding for your internet connection. They will ask for an email confirmation. As soon as you confirm them from your registered email address, they will disable MAC binding. This is for Legal Compliance – which confirms that you agree to take the responsibility of any misuse that happens using your Alliance credentials. After that only you’ll be able to connect from any other computer/laptop/router.

I have used MTS rs.999 plan from 2008 to 2013 , very good for downloading big files,it says 10 to 15 gb on 3mbps and unlimited on 68kbps, but I always got 1.8mbps average on the unlimited part and about 8mbps upto data 10gb. Never faced any problem as u mentioned,Your browser is not properly configured, dosent matter which browser u r using,my mts dongle cost me about rs.3400 back in 2008. Now I have “SANHATI BORADBAND” in Durgapur I use rs1000 plan it gives me a bandwidth of 2mbps, peering acumulated speed is 40mbps , as told by the cable guy.

Believe me anirudh, this is a random problem in broadband services,i used BSNL 750 plan fr 3 years now(almost),bt they provide the worst speed ever no company will provide the exact speed they promise to VIA these sites or cable operator bt alliance is,in that sense a much better choice than other private connections like wishnet or meghbela etc…they atleast give that minimum speed for surfing and download..so why not alliance?????

Hey, I live near tollygunge area, Sodepur bazaar to be precise. I am currently using Reliance 3G wireless data connection. I have been using it for the past 3 years and off late situations have become worse. Google takes more than 40 secs to load up and a download of 3 mb takes more than 45 mins now. Earlier I used to download an entire movie of 700 Mbs approx in that time. I am pursuing my engineering degree in Computer Science and I am solely dependent on internet for my daily chores. So, I have decided to surrender my Reliance Connection and switch to wired internet. My friends use Alliance and they swear by it. Some of them even get torrent speeds of 8mbs. However, I am not that much into downloading movies. All I need is a fast internet connection of unlimited plan via which I can stream videos without any hassle or buffering. Should I consider taking alliance connection? What are the pros and cons of Alliance? Which pack will be best for me as per my requirement? Thank You. 🙂

I have tried many internet connections in various areas in kolkata, so I think my experience will help.

Cable has been worst performer in all areas.

In Bypass/Hyatt the worst was Photon+, best was BSNL wired line
In ParkStreet the worst was BSNL, best was VSNL & Wishnet
In Kasba/Picnic Garden the worst was BSNL, best was Reliance 3G
In Gariahat the worst was Airtel wired and best was Photon+
In Beleghata worst was of BSNL and Reliance3G, best was Photon+

In Garia/HindustanMore the worst was MeghBela.
I have tried Alliance in Garia, there were 2 different people providing alliance connection, the first one was the one who cheated and provided the worst connection and they refused to terminate connection before I switched to Sify in Garia only to realize that the sify provider doesn’t have power backup meaning that if there is power fault in the providers office then despite having proper electicity working in my house I wont be able to use sify broadband.. the person was good and provided support in case of cable problems almost within 30 minutes but the cheap job of not having power backup wasnt good. Then I got another guy who provided alliance connection in Garia this was the best, they had power backup, they sent their ppl to fix line in 30 minutes and collect monthly bills and had no problems terminating service when I was switching my home.

            [ Example -> ABSPL n#Name Surname#C.I.T Road Paddmapukur]

            And Send SMS to 9163691000.

They should route you to your local provider.

  13. Abhishek

I forgot to mention.. one last lesson!

In Kustia(Picnic Garden) area, there is a BSNL Office and opposite of that is a Cable-cum-broadband provider.. It has been the worst experience in my life.. they will charge for router, wiring and all sorts of stuff as refundable security deposit which they will not refund on disconnection.. and also they will not disconnect the time you tell them, they wont fix anything and the worst part, they dont know what service they are giving if you ask them in details, similar has been the experience with cable operators all over kolkata.

So in all areas of kolkata I urge you people to not buy any type of service or connection from cable tv or cable internet operators, they are the worst.

Instead For your TV buy AirtelDigital TV or TATASKY Box etc and for Internet use 3G/4G DONGLES, these are the only ways you can have better 24×7 service free from wire problems which is most important if you work from home.

No need to beg in front of your illiterate cable operator to disconnect your line. If you are a paying customer.. even you deserve respect and better service.

Ideally it should be 500/8 = 62.5 KBps
However the actual download speed depends on network conditions of both the systems – the server from which the file is being downloaded and your system.

So I was just wondering, if I opt for the ‘Preferred’ plan what speed would I get on torrents.
Right now, I use reliance broadband. They charge 850 and I get 200kbps on torrents.

Torrents greatly depend on the seeds. Alliance provide a search engine for torrents – torbox.net. This search engine lists those torrents which are located within Alliance (and it’s collaborated) networks. So, most of the active torrents in Torbox will reach upto 2MBps download speed. I have usually downloaded torrents @ 1.5MBps on average.

All I can say is, the speed is good, as long as the torrent’s seeders are available within Alliance network. Otherwise, the torrent download speed should be same as regular download speed.

Hey I want to change over from BSNL. I am into downloading via torrent. I have a heard a lot about Alliance. Kindly advise whether it will be a good idea to go for as the cable operator providing it in my area was asking for non refundable installation charges to the tune of Rs.1500/-. BSNL did not charge any installation and what is more due to the internet, there are no monthly rentals for the land line phone. I intend to keep BSNL as a backup, but find the payment of a sum of Rs.1500/- exorbitant since I will not get anything in lieu of this payment. BSNL had charged me for the modem, but here they will not even provide that. Further, if I provide them with a WIFI router, they will charge me money for configuring the same. The router they will provide is quite costly. Please advise for I have heard that in tollygunge they provide the connection for as low as Rs.1000/-.

Guys please help me out of this conundrum.

If I had to choose, I’d go for the Premium – Downloaders Delight – Unlimited Reloaded pack, i.e. just next to the pack you chose.
